97. Have a road trip with Nate to Canada and see Niagara Falls
Our lives have been turned upside down these last few weeks. And for once, it's not fully baby related. Namely, we're moving back to Texas. More on that later (I think). Suffice to say, this move is a bit sudden and has caught us by surprise.
However, as all these issues were going on, and we were wondering if we should move somewhere else in Brooklyn (and sign a year lease, rent a truck pack and unpack everything, and put our firstborn as a new deposit), or go ahead and go back to Texas (closer to relatives, better job networking opportunities, but still having to pack and unpack, with the added benefit of not having jobs or housing arranged yet). Texas won, but that doesn't mean the process is figured out.
I don't recommend taking road trips with a 10 month old. I also don't recommend putting your life on hold just because you have a baby. Our compromise is that we waited until my mom was visiting so we could have help during the trip. We borrowed a portable crib from a friend, packed an excess of baby food and snacks and took off without any particular plan.
And we made it! Niagara Falls is a truly amazing natural wonder. I'm so glad we were able to spend two days exploring it. On day one we stayed on the US side, which has a beautiful state park. Nate and I did the Maid in the Mist boat tour while my mom and LP hung around the park people watching. We got soaked and enjoyed the falls close up. Incredible.
On day two we went to the Canadian side and got to see the horseshoe area of the falls up close. The mist on this side is so strong that it's as if it's constantly raining. I put on a poncho to protect LP who was napping on the ergo carrier. Every part that wasn't covered got soaked. Nate and my mom were dripping wet as well. Word of advice: when visiting the Canadian side of Niagara, bring your best rain gear.
The drive was pretty exhausting, mostly because LP gets bored in the car. Why, oh why isn't she one of those babies that naps in the car as a default? It's probably because she's not used to her car seat. Seriously, she only used the seat on average once a week. Such an urban pedestrian baby... :)
